Phase 2: Do Your Research!
5. It's time to reveal the secret of the French Astronomers.

As a team, Read the article at the following website.
Locate the names of the two men whose work made
a great impact on the scientific community.
Choose a team member to read text aloud. You may have to scroll down to see the main article.
Review other results for additional information on the French astronomers.
Write a 5 sentence summary of your discovery in your Math Journal.

Phase 3: Eratosthenes
5. All Teams assemble to share their findings up to this point.
After each team has the opportunity to report, you will listen to a reading of The Librarian Who Measured the Earth by Kathryn Lasky .
Pay close attention. This is another important piece of information you will need to complete your assignment!
Homework: Create a picture book that retells Eratosthenes' story. Make sure you include the step by step experiment he conducted. Your picture book must answer the following questions:
Who was Eratosthenes?
What question did he want to answer?
When did he conduct his experiment and what technology
was available to him?
Where in the world is Cyene?
Why was Cyene important for his measurements?

Phase 4: The Noon Day Project
6. Your team is about to take on a task that requires your best math skills and cooperation with mathematicians and scientists all over the world (Yes, literally).

Read all of the Home page, then report back to your commander for further instructions on how your team will become involved in this project.
